Celebrating 50 - honouring our past

In 2014, NMAA/ABA will celebrate its 50th anniversary. To mark this milestone we are launching an authorised history of the Association to document historical events as well as pay tribute to the countless volunteer women who, through their involvement, have ensured that mothers wishing to breastfeed their babies are given the information and help they need and deserve.

In December 2007 an appeal was held to help finance this history and we are grateful for the donations that have enabled us to initiate the project. A steering committee, led by Founder, Mary Paton, has been formed to ensure this major undertaking is achieved. There is a great deal of archival material available and history coordinators have been appointed for each ABA Branch to assist the author to gain easy access to these records and to past and present members.

We have already sought expressions of interest from writers and historians Australia-wide and are looking forward to being able to appoint an author who will do justice to the project. The history aims not only to mark the milestones of the Association, but also to capture the human story, its social history and its positive contribution to Australian society. There are such amazing stories to be told - the first mother to breastfeed an adopted baby; the mother who fed her 4th baby after bottle-feeding earlier babies; mothers breastfeeding twins, triplets and even quads; women who were told they could never feed who persevered and succeeded; mothers who because of their involvement with NMAA gained the confidence to go on and achieve in so many other fields of endeavour - these are the stories that need to be documented.

The book is to be a quality publication, which will conserve and protect the past before it is lost and make a contribution to the understanding by future generations of the role NMAA/ABA has played in the lives of so many Australian families. Such an undertaking is going to be costly. We are asking for your financial help. Any donation you are able to give us would be truly appreciated. We are going back through the membership records in order to alert our early members to the project and it is hoped that many will see their way clear to offer financial support.

Donations can be forwarded at any time. Please designate your gift to be used for the history. All donations are tax deductible and will be acknowledged. We are interested not only in a possible donation but also your story so do contact us c/o:
